Amazon has some smart home devices on the market, such as smart speakers, smart displays, security cameras, and video doorbells. Recently they also unveiled some novelties for the home, such as a robot and a smart thermostat, but that’s not all the company has in store for them.
A report from Insider (Paywall) found that the company’s next smart product could be in the form of a smart refrigerator. Smart fridges aren’t new as companies like Samsung already have several models out there. As such, Amazon likely relies on its Echo network and integration with its retail platform to target customers.
Similar to other smart fridges, Amazon’s smart fridge will be able to track food in the fridge. From there, it will detect when you are running low on items and notify users so they can order more from Amazon or Whole Foods, which are now owned by Amazon. It could even provide recipe suggestions based on what’s available in your refrigerator so you can dispose of food that is about to expire.
The report goes on to say that Amazon wouldn’t make the refrigerator itself, which we think is reasonable, and that they could partner with an appliance manufacturer to do this. It’s an interesting concept and could further integrate Amazon and its services into customers’ homes.
Amazon is said to have spent up to $ 50 million a year developing the device and even then there is no guarantee it will hit the market, so we’ll have to wait and see.
