The seventh beta of macOS Monterey appears to have hints of new screen resolutions suitable for the MacBook Pro line, as discovered by MacRumors.

There are two new resolutions in a list of supported graphics resolutions in macOS: 3,456 x 2,234 and 3,024 x 1,964. Each one bears a “retina” mark that Apple normally only applies to the screens of its own devices.

The aspect ratio for these new resolutions is very close to the current aspect ratios of the MacBook Pro computers sold today, but they are lower than what we are currently seeing in the iMac range, suggesting that they are not suitable for Apple’s desktops . Additionally, the numbers fit well with a true 2x retina, as opposed to the scaling approach currently used for retina displays.

It is possible that this is a mistake, but the timing is right. macOS Monterey is expected to hit the market this fall along with new MacBook Pro models with specially designed Apple silicon that would be faster successors to Apple’s much-lauded M1 chips found in lower-end Macs and the latest update to the iPad Pro can be found.

If reports in Bloomberg and elsewhere are to be believed, the new laptops would also include mini-LED displays that offer better contrast than the display technology currently used in Mac laptops, as well as additional ports such as HDMI or an SD card slot. These devices would also ditch the Touch Bar, which some users like but hate others, in favor of a return to physical function buttons. The 13-inch MacBook Pro would likely have reduced bezels, making it a 14-inch MacBook Pro. (A similar change replaced the 15-inch MacBook Pro with a 16-inch model a few years ago.)

Hence, increased screen resolutions join a host of other likely changes that would mark the most significant redesign of the MacBook Pro since the first Touch Bar models in 2016.

Leaks have also indicated an upcoming MacBook Air redesign, but this laptop is likely to come later.
