- According to Canalys, Xiaomi is now the second largest smartphone manufacturer in the world.
- If that analysis holds, it would catapult Apple into third place while Samsung still ranks first.
- This is the first time that Xiaomi has held this place, thanks in no small part to the fall of Huawei.
The venerable analyst firm Canalys has just published its global smartphone shipments for the second quarter of 2021. The report suggests that the top 5 smartphone vendors around the world have been mixed up somewhat.
According to the report, Xiaomi is now the second largest smartphone OEM in the world. It has thus improved by one place compared to the previous quarter. It is the first time that the company has achieved such a high ranking.
Of course, every time someone goes up, someone has to go down. In this case, Apple moved one slot to third place. The first, fourth, and fifth spots remain unchanged, with Samsung, Oppo, and Vivo occupying them, respectively.
While Xiaomi has made amazing strides lately, there is no question that Huawei’s exit from the top 5 is one reason why it was possible to do so. For years, Huawei occupied this second place and even temporarily overtook Samsung to first place in 2020. However, it was unable to maintain this dynamic under the Huawei ban. Now the company isn’t even in the top 5.
However, this is only one company’s report. It is quite possible that other companies will report other numbers that Xiaomi could still show in third place. However, there is no question that Xiaomi will finish second without a fight.
