Meet the trainer and crew

NBC featured Ted Lasso (Jason Sudeikis), an American football coach who eventually coached English football, in a series of ads for the station’s coverage of the Premier League. The ads were a hit, and the first season of the show premiered on Apple TV Plus in 2020.

(Spoilers ahead for season 1.)

Team owner Rebecca Welton (Hannah Waddingham) inherited the Richmond AFC from her cheating ex-husband Rupert (Anthony Head). She hired Lasso, a football-ignorant American football coach, to try to ruin the team to get her ex back. But Lasso turned out to be smarter than he looks and managed to win hearts, if not many, games. (He also bribed her with delicious homemade cookies.)

Lasso may seem like an all-American treasure, but his own life, including his marriage, is not exactly championship caliber. The team drama includes numerous players and their dramas on and off the pitch, as well as Ted’s fiddly but charming attempts to get the team and their lives back on track. The plot may sound simple, but you have to tune in to appreciate the feel-good charm of this show which, thanks to Lasso’s sweet soul and winning cast, feels both modern and a little dated.

Previews and more about Season 2

At the end of the second season, Lasso’s team, AFC Richmond, relegated from the Premier League to the championship. (If you’re like Ted and “Relegation” confuses you, that’s something American sport doesn’t, but imagine if the Yankees were thrown into the minor leagues.) One of the Season 2 trailer released shows the team has eight straight draws so it doesn’t look too good. So the team brings in a new character, a sports psychologist played by Sarah Niles, and she doesn’t seem to be as easily bribed with candy as Rebecca, who tells a terrified Ted that she doesn’t eat sugar.

On June 21, a second trailer was released, starring the irresistible hit Under Pressure from 1981 by David Bowie-Queen. Fresh tidbits include a Ted poop joke, Ted contemplates the UK version of Dukes of Hazzard would be The Earls of Risk, and Ted transforms into his alter ego – Led Tasso turning the table. (“Led” seems to be an involuntary personality change for Ted, as his buddy Coach Beard can dissuade him from it.) Ted also declares his loyalty to communism – but don’t worry, it is an invention of its own called “Rome Communism” and it seems to be based on romantic comedy films by Tom Hanks-Meg Ryan.

And while you wait for the show, shop for Ted Lasso and AFC Richmond jerseys and other items right now. The site doesn’t sell the shortbreads Ted whips up for “Biscuits with the Boss,” but there are plenty of recipes online that will try to recreate it if you’re curious.
