Veteran storm chaser Brian Emfinger had a thorough shave in a raging tornado a few days ago, but his drone wasn’t that lucky.
Emfinger was keen to capture some dramatic footage of the extreme weather event and sent his DJI Mavic 2 Pro straight to the action, making sure he was keeping a (fairly) safe distance himself.
The incredible footage (above) shows the incredible power of the tornado as it sped across land near Yazoo City, Mississippi, hitting a forest and sending debris into the sky on Sunday, May 2.
While he managed to capture nearly eight minutes of amazing footage, the force of the storm eventually proved too much for the tiny flying machine, resulting in … well … we couldn’t imagine what would eventually become of it.
Emfinger said that the sound you can hear in the video is mostly coming from his controller, although you can also hear his vehicle’s navigation system, which is probably giving him the most important driving instructions he has ever received, with the situation over the past few Gets pretty hectic in a few moments.
“Crazy tornado video from close to drones,” Emfinger tweeted after his adventure. “I had to flee quickly and the drone didn’t make it because it got caught in the inflow and I lost the connection when the tornado cut me off from the drone.”
He later said he had no intention of sending the Mavic 2 Pro on its final flight, adding that the tornado “almost got me, too”.
Though the memory card and its HD content were lost at the mother of all drone outliers, Emfinger was able to use the surprisingly decent footage that was streamed to its drone app in-flight.
Oh, and if Emfinger’s stunning video inspired you to grab your drone and head to the next tornado, remember that he has chased storms for years and is still here to tell his stories. In other words, approach such extreme weather systems with great care. Or just stay far away.
