Google is in the middle of one of its many battles with EU antitrust authorities – this time it is hoping to overturn the record $ 5 billion fine imposed on Google by the European Commission in 2018. and Google’s argument is that search bundling isn’t why it dominates the search market – Google search is just so damn good.
Bloomberg reports on Google’s latest argument, with Alphabet attorney Alfonso Lamadrid telling the court, “People use Google because they want to, not because they are forced to. Google’s market share in general search is in line with consumer surveys showing that 95% of users prefer Google over competing search engines. “
Lamadrid went on to brand the # 2 search engine, Microsoft’s Bing, incredibly: “We have presented evidence that shows that by far the most common search query on Bing is ‘Google’.”
Globally, Statcounter has Google’s search engine market share at 92 percent, while Bing is a long way off at 2.48 percent. Bing is the default search engine for most Microsoft products, such as the Edge browser and Windows, so quite a few people end up there as the path of least resistance. While it’s the default, Google argues that people can’t get out of Bing fast enough and that they are doing a navigational query on “Google” to break free of the Microsoft ecosystem.
Google’s argument that default settings don’t matter goes against the company’s other operations. Google pays Apple billions of dollars every year to stay the default search on iOS, which is an awfully generous deal when search standards don’t matter. According to current estimates, Google’s payments to Apple amount to $ 15 billion a year. Google is also paying Chrome rival Mozilla around $ 400 million a year to stay the default search in Firefox.
