Full Disclosure: Ford’s EcoSport wasn’t one of our favorite models.

Ford’s cheapest SUV, the EcoSport, is on its last legs in North America. The automaker has confirmed to Roadshow that the small crossover will also be built at the company’s Chennai plant in the second quarter of 2022.

This means that the small car EcoSport Crossover will have a shortened model year 2022 on the North American market. A Ford official tells Roadshow that the company will work to ensure there are enough products to get dealers through much of the 2022 calendar year. Interestingly, North America won’t get the slightly updated EcoSport seen in recent spy tapes; the current design will continue until Ford stops importing the model.

EcoSport’s exit from the US and Canada leaves the Escape compact like Ford’s cheapest SUV – the Blue Oval will do without a real entry-level SUV to fight against popular models like the Chevrolet Trax, Honda HR-V, Hyundai location and Toyota’s new ones Crown cross. However, Ford might have an unexpected asset: that 2022 Ford Maverick, a small pickup truck that carries a similarly friendly price tag.

The Maverick may not be an SUV, but its car-like unibody construction and standard hybrid drive could still be a compelling alternative for EcoSport target buyers. Like the EcoSport, the Maverick has front-wheel drive (all-wheel drive is optional) and the model has far superior consumption figures along with one slightly cheaper $ 21,490 base price including a target fee of $ 1,495. (Today’s Ford EcoSport 2021 starts at $ 21,640, including delivery of $ 1,245.) “When we talk about affordable vehicles, Maverick steps right in,” Ford spokesman Said Deep told Roadshow on Thursday. The Maverick is touted as a segment-breaking vehicle, and indeed it is At Roadshow, we believe it could even attract buyers from traditional economy cars how Honda Civic, not to mention used cars.

Deep confirmed that the Ford EcoSport will continue to be built continuously for European customers from the model’s other assembly plant in Craiova, Romania. The model built in the EU is not approved for sale in North America.

Ford sold 32,697 EcoSport models in the U.S. through August this year and 60,545 vehicles for the full year 2020.
