Our wearables have become much more powerful these days and many of them have integrated health-related functions such as sleep tracking. For Fitbit devices, however, the company appears to be introducing snoring and noise detection, at least that’s what an APK teardown from 9to5Google exposed.
According to APK teardown, they have discovered evidence of an upcoming feature that can detect snoring and other noises. This is done via the device’s microphone, which, according to Fitbit, “We are looking for noises specific to snoring. When our algorithm detects an event that is louder than the noise floor, it does a calculation to decide whether it is snoring or something else. If the noise level in your room is higher than the snoring, this function may not be able to detect the snoring. “
Currently, Fitbit devices can measure and track your sleep based on things like heart rate and exercise, but adding snoring and sound detection could help paint a better picture. Why is that important? Because, depending on how often you snore, it can be a sign of health problems, such as obstructive sleep apnea, which can negatively affect your health, such as blood pressure.
So detecting snoring could help get a more complete picture so that if you feel unwell, you can take this data to your doctor, where more tests can be done. The feature isn’t live yet, but since it was included in the APK, it may be released soon.
